New Beginnings Scripture for June

Our Mission Statement

Welcome-

Welcome to the New Beginnings Holistic Fitness Ministries family. We consider it a privilege to support your fitness efforts. We welcome your suggestions and ideas, so please let us know if there is anything we can do to make your experience with the monthly newsletter, website, weekly messages or message board more beneficial. We can be contacted at contactus@mynewtemple.org. It is our prayer to bring you words of encouragement and inspiration to motivate you to become fit physically, emotionally, spiritually and relationally. This is your New Beginning and we want to make it an awesome experience for you. As you begin this new adventure we are praying for you.

Who are we?

New Beginnings is a fitness ministry established in 2003 to offer a holistic approach to fitness that includes mind, body and spirit. A fitness ministry also serves to help people help themselves through physical and spiritual exercise. At New Beginnings we believe good health is a gift from God and can be obtained by following biblical principles as we lead a balanced life physically, mentally, spiritually and relationally.

What’s New?

June is the month that we celebrate and honor fathers.  To every Father we want to say, we celebrate you.  We pray God’s direction and greatest blessings on you and your family.

If you messed up yesterday, let it go, because you can’t get yesterday back, but you can move forward into a New Beginning in your fatherhood role today, with God leading you.

New Fitness Site-Watch for our new fitness community site coming soon.  It will allow you to join a group of people just like yourself that are trying to become fit.

  • Women will join a group with other women.   We all know that women have certain problem areas that men just don’t understand.  We will be able to talk about that uninterrupted.
  • Men will also have their own area to discuss the things they want to talk about as well.  Men, do you really like going to the gym to workout with your spouse or significant other or is that your time just for you?
  • If you want to lose more than 100 pounds, we know you are tired of hearing people talk about how they want to get rid of that last 5 pounds so they can fit into a size 2 like when they were in high school, so we have a group in the community for you also.  Your concerns are different and  we don’t want  you to get frustrated by people that do not understand  your struggle.  We even have personal trainers that have struggled or lost significant weight to be able to give you encouragement based on what they know based on knowledge and what they know based on experience.
  • Personal trainers with their own special gifts of encouragement to help you reach your specific goals.
  • If you need additional exercises and tools there will even be an advanced membership section of the site that will provide you with the extras  you need for a small monthly fee.
  • How about the ability to Instant Message each other or talk to each other via the site?  Would that be an encouragement to you?
  • And last but not least, accountability partners.  People that you report to and let them know how you are doing and what you are doing and they will do the same for you.  Angela is going to continue her Weight Loss Watch and will be encouraging you to join her, in tracking your weight, measurements, eating and workouts.  She is even going to recruit a virtual walking team of people that walk daily like her and report in.

Are you excited yet?  We hope you are because we are, Mr. Destiny is, Ms. Lindia is, Nicci is, so is His Royal Highness The Fitness Angel and Angela and the New Beginnings Team.  When the site is ready we will send you a personal e-mail, so you can be the first to check it out and give us your feedback.

Monthly Feature Article-

The Greatest of all Fathers By Kelvin Gilmore

A Godly Father on this earth is a rare jewel that is hard to find.
He is a faithful follower of Jesus-he is not among the lost and the blind.

He acknowledges Jesus as Lord in all of life's situations.
The spirit of God moves him - He doesn't need people's validation.

He leads by example - he studies the word and prays.
He ensures that things are done in his home only by God's way.

He teaches his family what God teaches him.
He doesn't rule his family just on a whim.

He demonstrates to his children how to be a God pleaser.
He won't tolerate attitudes in his home as cold as the freezer.

The Love for God and his family governs all of his decisions.
He ensures that his family has not only natural but spiritual provisions.

He is faithful to his wife cherishing her as a gift from the Creator.
He loves his wife like Christ loves the church and won't lead her like a wicked dictator.

Yes, to find a Godly Father is to find the rarest of jewels of great worth.
There is no greater accomplishment that a man can achieve on the face of this earth.

Prayer: Heavenly Father help me to be a father that will glorify you on this earth. Teach me your fathering ways all of my fathering days. In Jesus name,Amen.

Monthly Fitness Tips-

Tips

Back On Track June 1, 2009

For those of you that don’t know Angela is back on track.  She is doing her Weight Loss Watch Blog again.  She has determined that she will only update it once per week, because the rest of the time she is walking or doing something to move her towards her goal.  She finally realized she could not get it done if she spent all of her time at the computer.

You know how much she hated getting up early.  She was so bad that at one time she had to have early morning wake up calls.  No call, no getting up.  She has had a total change of mindset.  You can check out her article Change of Mindset = Change of Behavior.  It is the May 25, 2009 article.  She knows this to be true as she is watching it play out in her own life.  She will tell you that she did not desire or plan to be the New Beginnings mascot, but she is watching God do a transformation before her very eyes, physically, spiritually, emotionally and relationally.  Everything about her is changing but it had to start on the inside.  No lasting change can take place without first making an inward one.

It did not matter how much she tried or cried, she did not make a lot of progress in the physical changes she needed to make.  She has a new attitude and a new unwavering desire to get this done.  She said when 5am comes she shocks herself by how quickly she gets up and gets dressed.

She has been walking since May 9, 2009. She usually walks 70 minutes per day, which for her is 3.5 miles. She has been using this as her time alone with the Lord, so she does not allow anyone to join her, but she is going to add some praise and worship music this month so that she can increase her stride and her steps, going farther faster.  Here are some tips she wanted to share.

  • Get the rest, your body will not lose weight if you do not give it the rest.
  • Drink the water. It is necessary to flush out the toxins.
  • Eat 5-6 small meals per day instead of 3 large ones. It may end up being the same amount of food, but it allows your body to digest it over a longer period of time and forces your metabolism to work.
  • Stop eating at least 3 hours before you go to bed so that you are not going to sleep on it.
  • Soda is not one of Angela’s stumbling blocks, but she had been hearing from a lot of people that it is for them, so a word to the wise, stop drinking it and drink the water.  You will see a huge difference and some quick weight loss from reducing your sugar intake.  You might even see  your abs flatten a little bit.

Let her know how it works for you by writing on the message board or shooting her an e-mail through the contactus@mynewtemple.org, and we will get it to her.

Check out the New Beginnings Message Board for more tips that will benefit you under the Physical Fitness Category.  www.mynewtemple.org.  If you would like to add your own tips and suggestions please feel free to do so.  If you have forgotten your password submit a request to have it sent to you or reset through the message board sign in screen.

As always we encourage you to see a physician before beginning any exercise program.  Take the first step by getting up and doing something to take care of your most valuable resource, Your Health.

Your New Favorite Thing

We all have a list of our favorite things. It may not be written down anywhere, but you know the things that make you happy.

The list holds your favorite foods, music, TV shows, movies and even people in your life that you can't get enough of. This is the stuff that you really enjoy. It's the stuff that makes your life worth living.  The things you look forward to, like birthdays, holidays, whatever that is for you.

Somewhere on the list is your health and appearance. Well if it isn't it should be.  Sometimes health and appearance slip onto the list of things we take forgranted.  We may just assume we will be healthy even though we do nothing to ensure it.  You know that looking and feeling great make a good life even better.   So if you have gotten into the habit of getting up in the morning just throwing anything on with no concern for what it looks like, I want you to change your attitude.  You should care how you look.  Wrapping the package in a way that compliments you is important.

The interesting thing about your list is that without fail you'll always make time for it.

When your TV show airs, you watch it or record it to watch later.  Well don't you?  And if for some strange reason you miss either of those you will check in with some one else that you know watches it to see what happened.  I know I am telling the truth. When your favorite actor stars in a new movie, you do your part by going to the theatre.

Okay, I have to confess this is true.  I usually don't go to movies on the weekend they first come out.  You might ask why and the truth is Your Fitness Angel does not want to be bothered with the crowd.  Well even I succumb to this favorite thing, because the truth is when Beyonce' Knowles one of my favorite singers came out in the movie "Obsessed", I was there.  I went to a matinee, but I was there.  So if this is true of me, I have to believe it is true of you.  We are all human.

When you're hungry, stressed or emotional, you turn to your favorite foods.  When the weekend rolls around, you do everything you can to spend time with the special people in your life.  Yet when it comes to exercise you automatically say, "I don't have time."   I can't fit it in.

Time for TV, but no time for exercise... Time for a movie, which amounts to sitting in a dark theatre for 1 1/2 to 2 hours idly, but no time for exercise....  Time to go out to dinner with friends, but no time for exercise....  Time to sit around just chillin with your significant other, but no time for exercise....  Things that make you say hmmmm....We live in an age where life is full. You don't have extra time anymore, unless it is something you want to do.  That is what I always tell my clients.

You no longer have time. You make time for what you want to make time for, so let's stop making excuses and admit the truth.

  • You make time for your TV show.
  • You make time for your hobby.
  • You make time for your friends.

It's time to drop the charade of "I don't have time to exercise," "It's to difficult to eat right" and call it what it really is.

An excuse. And the truth is we are full of excuses, when there is something we do not want to do.

You know how to make time for your favorite things. You claim you want good health. You claim you want to look great. You claim you want more energy.  So the question I ask is what are you willing to do for it?

Exercise delivers all those benefits - and more.

If what you are claiming is true, I believe that exercise belongs on your list of favorite things.  Okay well maybe favorite is a strong word for some of us.  How about something I am committed to do.  My clients have told me that once they make a commitment it becomes one of their favorite things to do.

If you have ever paid attention to my battles with Angela, you know from her blogs that I have told her over and over and over again, what needs to be done.  The point until it gets in her head and yours and you make a commitment to do it, there is nothing else that I can do.  (Just for the record, she is back on track.  She has been walking every day any where from 45 minutes to 70 minutes daily.  She is committed to getting at least 10000 steps per day.  Her average scheduled walk time is 70 minutes or more daily which for her equates to 3.5 miles.

She is excited and her morning walks have become one of her favorite things to do at 5:30am.  You can check out her current weekly blog on the www.mynewtemple.org website.  She was blogging on The Fitness Angel site as well but decided to walk more and blog less and I agree.)  She dreaded getting up early, but found it was impossible to try to do everything she needed to do when she got home from work.  She dreaded the fact that she might see a stray dog when she was walking outdoors.  She got bored walking inside on the treadmill.

Yes, these are all excuses.  Here are some tips for turning your situation around and some things she used to turn hers around.  By the way, she has more energy and she has to go to bed by 10pm not 1am to give her body the rest it needs and be willing to get up at 5am, but she is loving it.

Make It A Favorite: How do you turn something that you've dreaded into something that you enjoy?

Partner With God to Lose Weight By Cathy Morenzie

Scripture to reflect on:   "O Lord my God, I cried unto thee and thou hast healed me."  Psalms 30:2

If we could lose weight (or dispel any other stumbling block) on our own, we would not need God. Strong willpower, self-discipline and self-control may help you reach your goal, but chances are that without God the journey or process will not be enjoyable, or the results sustainable.  So instead of always getting frustrated trying to do more works of the flesh and wasting more time, stay surrendered to God.

I love the image of a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire leading the Israelites by night. We have that same guide available to us still. It may not be clouds and fire for us it may be that still-small voice, the confirmation from a friend, or the inner feeling of peace. Paul gives us the perfect formula for success: "but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Phil 4:6).

Remember that we have His guarantee that He will finish the good work that He has begun in us. Where else can you get that kind of guarantee!

So how do you partner with God to help you in this journey that may seem overwhelming or impossible?

  1. Cry out to God the way David did. Admit your inability to accomplish the fitness you seek on your own and ask Him to lead you and guide you on this journey.
  2. Begin to search out scriptures that speak to your need, start to learn what God's word says about self-control, discipline, gluttony, exercise and health.
  3. Do something!  Sometimes Christians do nothing because they are waiting on God. Do something and God will confirm that your actions are correct. Start moving more, cut down on your junk foods, practice discipline when tempted to overeat, partner with God and just do something, and see how God honors your actions.

Cathy Morenzie has been in the fitness industry for over 20 years. She is a sought after presenter, published writer and fitness trainer who specializes in helping people to lose weight. Her new program "Healthy by Design" teaches people how to lose weight while strengthening their faith. Spiritual Fitness-
Gift or Prize, You Decide!
By Angela Willingham

Minister Kimberley McNeil says that we have to see ourselves as a gift, not a prize.  The question I had to ask myself and you are probably asking yourself is what does that really mean?  What is the difference between a gift and a prize?  Why should we choose to be considered one over the other?

A gift is something that is given.  A prize is something that is awarded or won in a competition.  A prize actually becomes property.  I kept thinking about it and for those of you who are sports fans or have participated in any type of competition, I would put it this way, a prize could be a trophy.  It is given the person or team that was the best at any given time.  The example that came to my mind was professional athletics.  At the end of each season whether in the NBA or the NFL an Eastern and Western Conference championship is played and decided based on how they played that year and prizes or trophies are awarded.  Then the championships are played and the one team that wins is given a trophy that identifies them as the best team that year.  Notice that in either case you had to do something to win the prize or trophy and it is just for that year.  Next  year you will have to do something else if you want to win the prize or trophy again.  That is not a gift, because you had to work for it.

The difference then in being a gift or a prize is that  a person has to work for a prize or trophy and they don’t get to keep it.  Next year the prize or trophy will go to someone else.  If  you receive a gift it is yours to keep.  Okay, so I ask myself and you should ask yourself do you want to be a gift that is given out of love and caring the way God gave us the gift of eternal life or do  you want to be a trophy or prize that has value or meaning for a time, but next year will be passed to who ever plays better or presents the best offering.

As a prize or trophy will I still have the same value to the recipient if I can no longer play the game, if my looks are gone or if I gain weight?  Prizes some how seem to lose their value as time goes on as the are replaced the bigger and better, but gifts because they come from the heart seem to grow in value.  If you don’t believe me check out something that was given to you with love.  Do you still have that gift?  Does it still have a fond place in your heart?  Do you still cherish the place it came from?  Do you remember the prizes you won?  Do you know where they are?  Do they have the same level of importance they once had?  Prizes usually don’t they get pushed to the side.  Think of some of the gifts you have received and then make a decision about yourself, do you want to be a gift or a prize.

In relationships, we have found ourselves as either the pursuer or the pursued and at the end of the day when the person that was doing the pursuing gets what they want they stop pursuing.  You are no longer the thing they want and now they are pursuing something else.  Why?  Because when you are going after a prize or trophy getting it is the goal.  Keeping it and working with it was not in the plan.  Okay, I tiptoed around it let’s make it real.

That person that wanted to sleep with you as part of the relationship, when you knew that was wrong was treating you like a prize, a conquest.  If you can hold on and see yourself as a gift, something to be cherished it will change things including your view of yourself.  Remember that a gift is only given once, but a trophy or prize can be won over and over and over again by different contestants.  The reasons that the different contestants want to win the trophy or prize are all different, but are they trying to win it for the right reason?  Now I ask the question again, do you want to be a gift or a prize?

Maybe you see yourself as a gift, but the world says that you have to give yourself to a man or woman in a relationship to keep them.  The question you have to ask yourself is which standard you will follow, the one set by the world or the one set by the Word

The world is speaking loudly and you will have to be strong in what you believe to keep your mind focused on being a gift, but you can do it.  Remember that your body is not your own.  You have been bought with a very high price and part of our saying thank you and expressing our gratitude to God for that is by honoring Him with our bodies physically, by working it out and keeping it healthy and by not abusing it with sex outside of marriage or any other harmful substances.

If you give yourself away to the wrong person you are in essence giving away someone else’s gift, because the truth is, whether we realize it or not we are all gifts, not trophies or prizes.  The only option we have is how we will present ourselves.  I am a gift and so are you.  A gift to be given at the proper time to the proper person, the person God chose for us.  If you give yourself to someone else you are giving away a gift to the wrong person.  You would never think to give the gift you bought for your mother to the grocery store clerk, but when we give our bodies to someone that is not our spouse that is what we are doing, giving away something that is valuable to someone that was not supposed to receive it.

No matter how much you might think you love or care for that person, it is not their gift and you have placed your self in the position of having to be re-gifted, wrapped back up and given away again.  This is not a message of condemnation if  you have already found yourself in that place.  It is a message of encouragement that you can stop now.  Many of us have had to be re-wrapped in new paper.  Because of what we have been through we are not the same as we were when we gave ourselves away the first time, but we are being made over and God can and will work in you to restore you to the place He intended.  Don’t keep going down the same road.  Change your thinking and begin to see yourself as a gift, fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God to be given as a gift not won like an NBA championship trophy that will be given to another contender next year.

Scripture:

Psalm 139:13-14:
13 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.  14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!  Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.

I Won’t Waste God’s Grace
By Charlotte D. Hillman
Hallel Ministries
(Based on Romans 6; May 1, 2009)

No more living in sin
Because there’s no more power of sin within
I am one with Christ
He’s all in my life
I died with Christ
And I share His new life
Christ died to defeat sin
He will never have to die again
How I live sin will not control
Because lustful desires are no longer my goal
I won’t use my body for wickedness
I won’t use it for sinning and all its mess
Completely to God I will give
I have new life and for Him I’ll live
I will use my body as a tool to do right
For the glory of God both day and night
I am free, I have victory
Sin’s power is broken, my struggle is over
Oh Lord my God, I won’t waste Your Grace

(We encourage you to read Romans chapter 6)

Too Busy Not To Pray: Slowing down to be with God

by Bill Hybels By Jeffrey R. E. Morgan

Got a lot going on? Do you think you are too busy to pray?  Well, this book shows you the benefits of an active prayer life, an action plan for starting or restarting a prayer life, and also some reasons why we should pray.

The author has broken the book down into 4 major sections with a few chapters each.  God calls us into his presence, God invites us to talk with him, God breaks down the barriers between us, and God speaks to our hearts.

The first section is all about who God is as a listener and a grantor of our prayers.  The author wants us to see the character of God throughout scripture and also the reasons God wants to grant our prayers.

The next section speaks of the ways in which we should pray.  What sorts of things should we be praying for and why that is important to each of us. "God doesn't want us to pile up impressive phrases. He doesn't want us to use words without thinking about their meaning. He wants us simply to talk to him as to a friend of father—authentically, reverently, personally, earnestly." (p. 54)

The third section speaks about barriers to our prayers getting through. In the chapter on prayer busters (ch. 9), the author gets to the heart of what could be standing in the way of answered prayers. "For each unanswered prayer, its important to check out three possible hindrances...the request may be inappropriate...the timing may be off...there may be a problem in the life of the person who is praying." (p. 100)

The last section is where the rubber meets the road.  This portion of the book is laid out in a practical manner and speaks to the heart of what we should do if we really want to start or in some cases restart our prayer lives.

In the chapter "Slowing Down To Pray", the author speaks of our lives like that of a race car engine. For most of us our engines are revved to the maximum output.  We are constantly racing off to the next event, class, bible study, or church service with never enough time to stop for prayer.

He asks a very pointed question, "Where does the still, small voice of God fit into our hectic lives? When do we allow him to lead and guide and correct and affirm? And if this seldom happens, how can we lead truly authentic Christian lives?" (p. 125)

What I loved about this book is that it not only enlightened me as to why we all should be praying more often, but it spoke the importance of listening (ch. 12), how to hear God's leadings (ch 13), and what to do with leadings (ch. 14)

If you are a person who is wondering where we should pray, when we should pray, why we should pray, how to pray, or what to pray for then this book will be of real use to you.

If you have never started your prayer life or are looking to rekindle the flames of a once fruitful prayer life, then I highly recommend you read this book.

God is waiting daily to hear from you.  Are you willing to slow down enough to speak to him?

Jeffrey R. E. Morgan, a member of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS), founder of Blessings From Heaven Ministries, and Master of Divinity (M.Div) student at Faith Evangelical Seminary, has a passion for Christ and the Word of God and seeks to share this with his readers.

Contact us if you have a woman’s faith story you would like to share for the Women’s Faith Stories Website www.womensfaithstories.com.  Send your comments to us at contactus@womensfaithstories.com

Word of Encouragement-

We started out this month’s newsletter by talking about Father’s Day.  Many have not been raised with their fathers in the home.  Today we want to encourage dads that have not been there to step up and get back in your children’s lives.  Move past the guilt and the condemnation that the enemy is trying to put on you into the future that God has for you.  Your children need you.  Don’t let the past stop you or cause you to miss out on a very viable future.  Ladies, if at all possible let your attitude and bad feelings go so that your children can have the love of both parents.

2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature, old things have passed away and all has become new.”

 Our Mission Statement

Our Mission is to draw individuals to Jesus Christ through the Ministry of Holistic Fitness and to see the Body of Christ become fit in all areas by providing tools and information to empower you to succeed. New Beginnings is dedicated to helping you gain personal, spiritual, physical, mental and relational fitness by developing the courage and confidence necessary to set and achieve goals based on biblical principles. Most people encounter difficulty reaching goals, sticking with a diet or completing a task by trying to make an outward change without having made any inward spiritual changes. In other words, all improvements in your life begin with a change in your mind and spirit.
