The Struggles of Single Parenting
By Minister Kimberley McNeil

During the 11 years of my relationship and marriage, I had taken a secondary role in the disciplinary department. Although I addressed immediate issues and said things like, “Stop teasing your little brother,” “Stop hitting your sister,” and “Pick up your toys, and clean your room.” However, when things became very heated or the children did not listen, I brought out the big guns, “Wait till your Dad gets home.” Immediately, the children stopped fighting, cleaned their rooms, and did whatever else they were supposed to do. Their father, an Army sergeant ran his home like he did his squad, with perfection and precision. Anything outside of that was not tolerated and dealt with.

Although I found myself sounding like Erma Boyle from the television cartoon, Wait Till Your Father Get’s Home, I did not mind, as I found discipline to be something I hated to do. Just seeing the tears well up in my children’s eyes made my heart ache, thus I quickly reversed any decision to make them smile again. Their father was my safety net, doing the thing I most hated to do.

This worked for me until one November morning; their father told me he was filing for divorce, and that he wasn’t coming home.

Initially, the shock of our life change inspired my children to get along. My daughter who is almost five years my son’s senior became very maternal towards her brother. Because of her age and maturity, she was able to see and process the decline of the marriag. My son took the news very badly, and as a result, spiraled into many emotional and behavioral issues. Although we received counseling, my son could not process through the void that he felt, and expressed it in any way he could.

At first, I excused his behavior, as I did not want to add to the heartache he was currently experiencing. Plus, I really didn’t know how to appropriately discipline him. I tried time out, talking, taking privileges and everything else the books said; but to no avail. The more I talked, the more his behavior tumbled. As my son grew older, he learned how to turn the things I said around to his advantage. Everything was my fault. I felt defeated. On several occasions, I found myself wanting to throw in the towel.

But, I could never find it in me to give up on my son. Although tired, weary and worn, I would try again. Then one morning while meditating, the following scripture came to life, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he won’t depart.” What struck me is that there is no call to a specific parent for this.

As such, I found myself in a place having to force myself into parenting. It meant that I could not be their friend, or take a back seat to parenting. I had to be firm, stick to my word, and make them responsible for their actions.

The strange thing is that my children wanted and needed Godly discipline. As I moved from being passive-reactive to assertive, I noticed a change in my children. Our relationship grew and evolved. And although not all of our issues were solved, we were able to work through some of the issues that plagued them after the divorce. And although things were not perfect, things became much better, and got back on the journey being a family again.

As I look at my children, I see the growth and maturity that has occurred in their lives. I know that with continued positive parenting, they are well on their way to being all that God called them to be.

Weight Loss Tip # 35
Get Organized

If you find yourself without anything to eat for lunch, that cheeseburger and fries are going to seem very tempting. If you prepare a healthy turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread, along with a banana or orange ahead of time, you’ll be able to resist junk food later. Tip number 37 is one that I believe goes along with this one it reminds us to travel with food.

I know that sounds kind of crazy, but Airline food when it is served at all is notoriously bad, high in sugar and fat. Bring fruit or a healthy sandwich with you. On a trip to Pennsylvania a friend taught us this trick. She stopped at Subway and brought her sub with her minus the dressing. While the rest of us were suffering with peanuts and soda and unable to wait until the plan landed to eat she was enjoying a healthy subway sandwich. The kind that Jared used to lose all of his weight.

This same advice applies if you are traveling by car. Most rest stops along the highway are full of junk food, fast food and snacks. Traveling with food allows you to make decisions about your nutrition that are taken away from you when you leave it up to chance.

This is actually a good habit to be in all the time. You never know when you might be out longer than you intended to or need to make a stop at the grocery store. Better not to go in with an empty stomach if you want to stick with your plan.

Check out the New Beginnings Message Board for more tips that will benefit you under the Physical Fitness Category. www.mynewtemple.org. If you would like to add your own tips and suggestions please feel free to do so. If you have forgotten your password submit a request to have it sent to you or reset through the message board sign in screen.

As always we encourage you to see a physician before beginning any exercise program. Take the first step by getting up and doing something to take care of your most valuable resource, Your Health.

Message from The Trainer’s Corner-By Lindia Lamb-CPT

Hello again!
Protein and Carbs together-important balance!
Do you include a protein source at each and every snack and meal?

If you do, you'll maximize the time and energy you're putting into your exercise routine for the best possible results with the least amount of effort. (You are exercising, right?) It is very important to balance meals and snacks with carbohydrate-rich and protein-rich foods together. (Moderation is the key.)

A meal with carbohydrates alone is problematic because glucose levels shoot up and then crash down.

This can leave you feeling tired, hungry, and weak - and gives your body an easy opportunity to convert that meal to fat.

When protein is included, however, you will not only stay full longer, but glucose levels will stay more consistent, your metabolism will work more efficiently, and you will feel energized for a longer period of time.

When the two are eaten together, proteins slow down the digestion of the carbohydrates, and energy from carbohydrates is released slower. Remember balance. We can all use a little balance in our lives!

Stay Blessed & Stay Fit!

The Blame Game
Excerpt from Get Fit-Fitness Angel Newsletter

Here is my question, from Your Fitness Angel to you-Whose fault is it that you're out of shape?

Your family, the relationship that went wrong, your father because he left home, the divorce, the job? If you go by what you hear on TV and in diet ads then you believe that it's anyone's fault but yours.

The big diet companies think that if they put the blame on you, then you wouldn't buy their magic weight loss pills. So they put the blame on your metabolism, your modern diet (ie fast food), or your busy schedule, then try to provide some quick fix or easy solution for getting the weight off instead of putting the blame where it belongs - which is squarely on you.

Sure, you have obstacles and there may be contributing factors that get in your way - your schedule, your job, your kids, the weather, your knee injury from college...but ultimately you have the body that you accept. We are not talking about having the perfect 10 body, we are talking about the body that is better, in better shape than the one you are walking around in right now. You don't like your thighs or your hips, but you won't do anything about it. Just for the record, I am not talking about weight loss surgery, plastic surgery, special weight loss drinks or anything like that, so don't look for what appears to be an easy out. Those are not the answers I am talking about. You just keep talking about what you would like for it to be and making excuses for why it is the way it is.

I'm going to repeat that so it will really sink in.

You have the body that you accept, which is the same as saying it really must be the body you want or you would make an effort to do something to change it.

Embracing the blame for your current weight is not a bad thing - it's empowering. Think about it. If it really wasn't your fault, if it really was due to a long list of variables that you have zero control over, then you'd be stuck. You'd have no way to change. Isn't that disappointing, I can't change? Fortunately, that is not true.

 Spiritual Fitness-

Distractions Will Come!

By Angela Willingham

Several weeks ago I joined a new church. Pastor Troy was sharing that we have to guard the vision that God has given us. He told us that the enemy comes at us in one of three ways, either by deception, distortion or doubt. I am not sure if you understand but he just blew the enemies game right out of the water. Deception is a lie. It is something that looks like the real thing but it is not. It may be a relationship and it looks like something God would have for you but something about it is just not the real thing. Several years ago a young man that I know Pastor Warren Stewart Jr., now the Senior Pastor of The Remnant Church in Phoenix, AZ shared that for every man God has called, an assignment has been sent to keep him from becoming all that God wants him to be.

Wow. I bet he was no more than 22-23 when he came with that profound revelation from heaven. I know that word had to come straight from the Lord. Entry is gained to the man by deception. Maybe she stroked his ego, better than his wife did, but it is still deception and a distraction sent by the enemy to stop God’s purpose. Maybe it is being misguided into believing sex without marriage is okay, when the bible clearly says it is not. Somehow we have begun to believe as Christians that if we love each other it is all right. Deception, it’s a lie.

Then Pastor Troy told us that the enemy might use distortion, the right idea just blown out of proportion. You have been around people that stretch the truth. God said this, but when they get through telling the story it is bigger than what was really said or less than. Kind of reminds me of the fish stories of old. The first time the story is told the fish is the size of your foot and by the time the story gets told later it is the size of your foot five times.

And then he hit the thing the enemy uses to try to destroy me personally and that is doubt. You know what God said, yet stuff keeps happening to make you think you misheard God. I shared with my ministry and business partner that this is the trick the enemy uses on me and I asked him to pray for me in that area. Nothing makes the enemy madder than our admitting the issue and asking to pray about it. He can keep bringing the same thing up as long as we try to hide it or keep it to ourselves.

He intends to destroy us through pride or whatever method he can use to get us off course. I don’t know about you but I am tired of him trying to mess up my future with the same old methods and the same old lies. Devil it’s time for you to bring something new.

When God has an assignment for you, you can be assured there will be distractions that will get you off track. Some of your distractions will be good things like my new grandson Sebastian, a new relationship that you know was sent from God, your job or some other distraction to keep you off focus, whatever it is you know that it is still just that a distraction.

The biggest distraction is worry. Worrying about things you cannot change. Worrying about things that God has already given you victory over, you are just waiting to see the manifestation in the natural because it is already done in the spirit realm.

You might remember that after Daniel prayed in Daniel 10:10-14, the bible says, 10 Just then a hand touched me and lifted me, still trembling, to my hands and knees. 11 And the man said to me, “Daniel, you are very precious to God, so listen carefully to what I have to say to you. Stand up, for I have been sent to you.” When he said this to me, I stood up, still trembling. 12 Then he said, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer. 13 But for twenty-one days the spirit prince[a] of the kingdom of Persia blocked my way. Then Michael, one of the archangels,[b] came to help me, and I left him there with the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia.[c] 14 Now I am here to explain what will happen to your people in the future, for this vision concerns a time yet to come.”

There are some things God has shown you and they like the visions He gave to Daniel are for a future time. When that time will be we do not know because time is in the hands of the Lord, but what we do know is that He is in control of everything.

Know that as soon as you set your mind to wait on the Lord, here come the distractions, the enemy at war against your plan and good intentions, at war against you fulfilling your purpose. The distractions sent to cause us to fall back into old habits. If you are anything like me hindsight is always 20/20. You can always figure out what you should have done or could have done, but it is to late to do that day over. Watch out for distractions that throw you off track and intend to keep you off track. Recognize that all distractions are not bad, they just have bad results when they keep you away from the thing that God intended. Your plan may have to be adjusted, but you can be successful even with distractions, if you continue to lift even the distractions up to God for His divine direction.

Remember distractions are not always bad things. My grandson was a good distraction, but during his extended hospital stay, I was not always able to get home when I wanted to or eat what I planned to eat. I did not necessarily get the rest I intended. I had to adjust. If you have ever been to jury duty, you know that it is a requirement and it is a distraction. Your life is not your own and they expect you to be where they want you to be when they want you to be there, no exceptions.

Look at your life right now. Identify the things that are distracting you or keeping you from doing what God has called you to do whether it is spiritual, physical, relational or emotional. Even when distractions come they can be overcome, if we approach them with the right attitude and we are looking for a way of escape. Don’t live in the distractions, press through them to a place of balance that allows you to still accomplish all that God has assigned your hand to do. If you seek God first He will balance everything else out including the distractions.

Take time now to identify your distractions. It could be people or a person. It could be a bad habit or a place. It could be a mindset or thought process that you have attached too. It could be your will fighting against the will of God for your life. You keep trying to have it your way.

Whatever it is take time to identify it and then allow God to show you His way of escape from your situation or distraction into the balanced life He has for you. I don’t want to escape my grandson, I want to be able to enjoy him to the fullest and also do what God has called me to do. Through Christ I know that all things are possible so I know I can have balance and I can escape my distractions whether they are short term or long term if I will focus on God and let Him live His life through me.

 Scripture focus:

1 Corinthians 10:13:
13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Monthly Devotional-
3Recognize the Signs of Lie Babies—Part 1 of 3
By Minister Charlotte D. Hillman
Hallel Ministries

Before one can get rid of something one must first of all recognize that it’s there. As I previously mentioned, the lie baby I was dealing with was pride. After the Lord showed me the baby I was carrying, He further confirmed it through the following *signs.

1. Insecurity. Insecurity is the root of many unhealthy and ungodly behaviors. It provokes us to want the lavish praise and attention of others too much. Much of pride is motivated out of one’s unmet need for self-worth. Finding one’s identity and security in Christ is a must to avoid pride.

2. The need to be right. The need to be right prevents one from appropriately evaluating issues as well as themselves (Galatians 6:3). A person who needs to be right has an exalted investment in himself or herself and thinks that he/she knows better than others. In religious circles, the need to be right is frequently manifest through always saying ‘God told me’ or ‘God showed me’.

3. Being argumentative. Individuals, who argue their point of view, are allowing pride to get the best of them. At the root of their argument is a belief that they are right and the other is wrong and that their will should prevail. It is appropriate to advocate for a point of view or position but not to do so in such a manner that you are more invested in your opinion than in arriving at a mutual understanding.

4. More invested in being heard than in hearing. When someone develops a pattern of needing others to listen to them rather than first hearing others, pride is motivating the need. Oftentimes, the individual does not feel loved or valued unless people “hear them out.” In truth, this is often just an expression of insecurity and pride.

5. Anger. Anger is a self-justifying emotion. This means that the nature of anger is to prompt us to justify our position and blame another for the wrongdoing. Justification of self leads to denial of our own complicity or wrongdoing. The scripture warns that the “anger of man does not accomplish the righteousness of God.” (James 1:20). An individual who is angry a lot is suffering from pride.

If you are carrying the baby of pride,
Eventually the signs will show.

Elevate Prayer Conference-
Stormie Omartian

You know that we are always looking for ways and opportunities to grow in ministry, so we can better serve the people of God and do what God has called us to do. Several of our team members were blessed with the opportunity to attend the 2009 Elevate Prayer Conference at Central Christian Church of the East Valley in Mesa, AZ. The Guest Speaker was none other than Stormie Omartian, the author of such great books like The Power Of A Praying Woman, The Power of A Praying Wife, The Power of A Praying Husband, Lord I Want To Be Whole and The Prayer That Changes Everything, just to name a few.

Angela had 30 pages of notes when Stormie got finished. If you have never read one of Stormie’s books we want to encourage you to do so. She shares how her mother was mentally disturbed and because of that she would often lock Stormie in the closet. We all have our own closets, places that represent the bad times in our lives. Stormie shared how she had to pray to be able to get past the issues of her past and we will have to pray to get past some of ours. She shared excerpts from many of the books that she has written as she shared with us from the topics, The Prayer that Changes Your Life, The Prayer that changes your Relationships, Prayer to Move into your future and Prayer that changes everything.

If you are struggling right now we want to encourage you to read her autobiography or one of her prayer books as part of your daily time of study. We believe she will help you to learn how to face your past through prayer and leaning on the Lord. The Elevate Conference is held every year in Mesa, AZ.

The Pastor of Central Christian Church of the East Valley is Cal Jernigan. Angela and Minister Kim have both had the awesome opportunity to attend worship service there and recommend it as a church to consider if you live in that area or find yourself in the Mesa, AZ area visiting. You can visit their website at www.cccev.com.

The Fitness Angel is leading exercise classes each Tuesday and Thursday morning at the Adult Center located at 7th Street and Roeser in Phoenix, AZ, at 9am. If you are available and would like to have your muscles stretched toned and worked out join him in his Step Aerobics class.

Additionally, beginning Saturday, March 7, 2009 The Fitness Angel will be conducting a workout class at Desert Life Church of Scottsdale, AZ. The pastor is Pastor Troy Johnson. This church is multi cultural and multi generational so everyone feels welcome.

If you do not have a church home we recommend it. There are many very positive and encouraging areas of ministry to be found here. Ministries for youth, children, young adults, a Recovery Ministry and many small groups to help you grow in your walk with the Lord in a setting that is not threatening. Pastor Troy breaks the word down in very simple easy to understand language and always leaves you with application points that will help you build new spiritual disciplines.

The Fitness Angel recommended the church to Minister Angela and she watched the sermons on line until God directed her to join. If you do not have a church home no matter where you are in the world we encourage you to check out the website and listen to the audio podcast or watch the video. You can even print the sermon notes to make it easier for you to follow along. This church can be found on our find a church link page.

We encourage you to start with the Vision Series he completed in the month of January 2009 and let him know how it impacted you. He is an awesome teacher and breaks the word down in such a way that you will leave knowing exactly what you need to do to apply the word to your life. Check out the churches website at www.desertlifechurch.com. If you do not presently have a church home, where you are growing, we encourage you to visit in person or on the web.

Watch for changes to The Fitness Angel’s weekly message. He will be moving to a 30 minute show with various segments for your benefit. We will keep you posted on the changes so you will not miss anything.

Angela’s Weight Loss Watch- Watch for the changes to the Weight Loss Watch on The Fitness Angel site. They are attempting to make it more interactive to get more of you and us involved and to provide more encouragement for Angela and each of us. She would love to have you join her in it. Blogging is not really that exciting when you do it alone.

She would love to hear some of your work out stories. Tell us about some of the funny stuff and some of the stuff that blessed you, by kicking you into gear.

Remember you can join Angela in this endeavor by going to The Fitness Angel site www.myfitnessangel.com and completing your profile. She would love to see your pictures so feel free to upload them to the site and e-mail her to let her know how you are doing if you choose not to put everything on the site. If you have any problems updating your information please contact her and let her know, because we want to make sure this works for everyone. Her e-mail address is angela@mynewtemple.org.  What Have You Been Reading?

Many of you have read some awesome books that have really ministered to you, spiritually, emotionally, relationally or physically. Let us know what you have been reading by writing to us on the message board. Your recommendations might help someone else. Please let us know if you have read some good Christian fiction as well. Many of those books have awesome messages contained within them and we want to encourage people to grow spiritually any way they can.

The Ministries’ Monthly Book Recommendation-From The New Beginnings Team

Reading has been slow for us over the last few months. Angela has been reading a daily devotional by Myles Munroe that has her attention along with Victory Over The Darkness by Neil Anderson. She has been reading Victory Over The Darkness very slowly because there is just so much in it. If you have never read it she recommends it.

This month we are recommending that you read anything by Stormie Omartian. After you read it write to us and let us know what you read, what you learned and if you would recommend it to others. If you have never read any of her books here is what we would recommend:

Unmarried Woman-Power of A Praying Woman
Married Struggling in your Marriage-Power of A Praying Wife and/or Husband
Struggling Emotionally-Lord, I Want To Be Whole
Struggling with Your Past-Stormie
Need Guidance-Just Enough Light For The Step I’m On

Look in the cover of the book and see what other resources she has written and check out the one that fits where you are today. She has written books for children and parents as well. Let us know what you think.

If you want to do some reading for fun- We have read books by Francine Rivers (Atonement Child), multiple books by Jacquelin Thomas, Victoria Christopher Murray, Terri Blackstock and many others. You can get many of these authors at your public library. They are excellent books and they all have a message that could be a blessing to you without being self-help books that tend to be boring too many. They deal with real life issues and you can actually see yourself or people that you know in the characters. Tell us about fiction books that you might be reading that might bless someone else.

5Let us know what you have been reading by writing to us on the message board http://mynewtemple.org/aMessages.html or sending us a message at contactus@mynewtemple.org.

 Monthly Book/Bible Study Blog

The book blog is on hold while we focus on making changes that will make it easier to post. Feel free to write about books you have read or to comment on the ones the New Beginnings Team suggests by going to our message board.

It does not matter who she was, we would just like to take this opportunity to honor them. Check out last month’s newsletter for more information.

 Word of Encouragement-

Wherever you find yourself today, know that God is still in control. It may appear to be dark, but He has already placed every thing in you that you will need to get past this moment. Stormie Omartian, said He gives us just enough light for the step we are on. Stop trying to figure out everything that is up ahead. Let God deal with that you let Him take you by the hand and lead you through today.

Something else that Stormie taught is that there is a prayer that changes everything and that prayer is praise. Make sure you take time to thank God for today and all that it holds the good and the bad, the stuff that makes no sense because He is even using that stuff to build spiritual muscle in you for the future purpose and plan He has for you. You can’t have weak muscles and move into the purpose He has for you. He works all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

Remember Romans 8:28: 28 And we know that God causes everything to work together[a] for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them and Joel 2:25: 25 The Lord says, “I will give you back what you lost to the swarming locusts, the hopping locusts, the stripping locusts, and the cutting locusts.[a] It was I who sent this great destroying army against you. Even if you brought it on yourself, He will restore.
Thank you Lord, for being a restorer. Amen

New Beginnings is dedicated to helping you gain personal, spiritual, physical, mental and relational fitness by developing the courage and confidence necessary to set and achieve goals based on biblical principles.
