THE C.H.O.I.C.E.S. WE MAKEWritten by Adele James Hi, everyone. What a blessing it is to be able to write this column. First, of course, God is to be praised for all He has done, is doing and will do in our lives. Everything that is good and worth it all comes from Him. I would also like to thank Temple Time for asking me to write this column, which affords another avenue to get healthful information out to our members, family and friends. It is my hope that this column will provide useful information, answer questions and put to rest those habits we sometimes have that are not good for us. In this column, it is my prayer that throughout it all, God will be glorified. This column is not about any person but is about us maintaining our body, which is the temple of the Holy Spirit and where He desires to reside. God is helping me look at it this way – I would NOT want to live in a filthy, overcrowded, home that is falling apart so why should I expect the Holy Spirit to desire to live in my temple if I don’t clean it up, maintain it and make room for Him? This column will not only serve you but me as well. I cannot just write an article for others and not follow my own advice. Of course, sometimes we have other things going on in our life that might have an effect on our body, such as an illness, medications we are taking, etc. This is clearly understood. The orders we are given by our physicians should be followed through to completion so I would never advocate you changing anything without first consulting your physician. Never take on any changes without first talking to him/her because they know you better than anyone and know your actual health status. In the writings of this column, my desire is to bring you information regarding those illnesses which often affect many of us or others we know, such as diabetes, cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking cessation, accessing better healthcare, good eating habits, what questions do you need to ask the doctor during your visit to the office regarding an illness, surgical procedure, referral to a specialist and many more subjects. I would like to encourage each of you to become familiar with all health information regarding your body. You should always know certain things, such as, which is the normal reading for YOUR blood pressure, what is the range for good blood pressure, what is your reading for blood sugar and cholesterol and what are the normal ranges for them? How many times a minute do you breathe? How would you know when you are breathing too fast or too slow? What number is too low? What is your heart rate? Is it too high? Too low? Do you know how to check your own pulse and respiratory rate? When you go to the doctor, do you write down any of the information he/she gives you regarding these readings? Or, do you wait for someone to ask you what your normal reading is for these checks and not be able to provide this information to them? We all need to take charge of our own healthcare. We need to be sure we have the knowledge we need to deal with what is going on with our body. We need to quit hiding behind the, “I just don’t want to know bad news”, statement and come out and live!! Seek wisdom and knowledge from God. Knowledge is power! And, we need power, power to live, power to enjoy life, power to take control over our healthcare and the power to be informed and not afraid. Thinking we will receive bad news prevents people from going to see their physician on a regular basis; however, this population of “not wanting to know bad news” people ranks higher in most of the disease categories and related deaths because of this thinking. By the time an appointment is sought with the physician, they are often at the last stage of something, which means they usually die faster than persons who maintain good health practices. For some reason, people often associate not feeling well with bad news all the time. This is something that has to be overcome. Not feeling well often means that something can be done so that we do not have to suffer all the way to the last stage and die. We need to go to the doctor, have the necessary tests, have a consultation with the doctor once the results are returned and follow all instructions, including taking the medications prescribed until they are finished. We also have to stop self-diagnosing and self-medicating. God has blessed individuals to become physicians and other medical personnel for a reason – to help us. So, it behooves each of us to first put our trust in God and then follow the advice of the physicians who are trying to help us. This is how we can begin to take control of our healthcare. It is always okay to ask certain questions you might have of other healthcare professionals, however, you should always be directed to your physician. Use wisdom when talking with anyone who would try to diagnose you and/or prescribe things for you to take or do who is not your physician. ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN. You can begin to take control of your healthcare today by documenting the information you currently have about your health. Write down your blood pressure readings, cholesterol results and any other testing or procedure information that has been performed on you. Keep this information in a safe place and let someone you trust know where you have stored this information. Document all medications you are currently taking by name, dosage and reason for taking each of them. Keep a copy of all medications you are taking in your wallet also. This is helpful in the event of an emergency if you are not able to speak for yourself or think clearly. If you have high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, etc., wear a Medic Alert bracelet or necklace. As healthcare professionals, this is one of the first things we look for when helping others. All the information related to your health (including the medications you take) is kept by the Medic Alert organization (all information is provided by you) and can be accessed quickly in the event of an illness or accident. Applications for the Medic Alert bracelet or necklace can be obtained at the pharmacy — just ask the pharmacist for an application. This could SAVE YOUR LIFE in the event of an emergency! Ask God to help you take control of your healthcare by including this as a request on your prayer list. Pray over it DAILY, meditate over it DAILY and watch God work! Until then, remember to make wise CHOICES.
New Beginnings Scriptures for January 2006 2 Corinthians 5:17-New Beginnings Theme Scripture Our Mission StatementOur Mission is to draw individuals to Jesus Christ through the Ministry of Health and Fitness and to see the Body of Christ become fit in all areas by providing tools and information to empower you to succeed. New Beginnings is dedicated to helping you gain personal, spiritual, physical, mental and relational fitness by developing the courage and confidence necessary to set and achieve goals based on biblical principles. Most people encounter difficulty reaching goals, sticking with a diet or completing a task by trying to make an outward change without having made any inward spiritual changes. In other words, all improvements in your life begin with a change in your mind and spirit.
