WALK IT OFF
Walking-The Easy Way to Get Fit!
By Angela Willingham
Walking has become the most popular exercise among Americans. It is easy, convenient, affordable and natural. It is a low impact activity, which makes it an exercise that almost anyone can do from the beginner to the most advanced, physically active person. Walking 20-30 minutes a day, three times per week can yield enormous results. Walking promotes weight loss, strengthens bones, decreases stress and tension and helps you sleep better.
Remember that changing your eating habits is a key component to becoming physically fit. So along with your walking let’s watch what we are eating.
Here are some walking tips that just may be a help to you. Walking the right way can help you move faster and more smoothly, as well as give you better health, fitness and attitude. Walking the wrong way can lead to wasted effort and you really don’t get any faster.
- Overstriding: When walkers try to walk faster, a natural inclination is to lengthen the stride in front, reaching out further with the forward foot. This leads to clumsy, ungainly gait, striking hard with the feet. Your shins may hurt and your really don’t get any faster. This type of walking is actually uncomfortable while you are doing it so it may even lead to you walking less, a shorter distance, than you would have if you had done it correctly. It actually tires you out.
Helpful Tip-All of the power of your walk comes from pushing with the back leg and foot. If you are trying to walk fast, concentrate on taking shorter, quicker steps. Then think of really rolling through your step with your back foot and leg, getting a good push off. The result will be faster feet and lengthening your stride where it does you some good-in back. Check it out and let us know if it works for you and if it isn’t more comfortable.
- Unnatural Arm Swinging: If you keep your arms still at your sides while walking, or swing them without bending them, you will notice your hands swell quite a bit. Long, straight arms act like a pendulum, slowing you down.
Helpful Tip-A normal walking motion uses the arms to counterbalance the leg motion. A walker can add power and speed by using the arms effectively. Bend your arms 90 degrees and swing them naturally back and forth opposite the leg motion.
- Not Drinking Enough Water: If you don’t drink enough water before, during and after walking, you may experience cramping and fatigue. This is especially important during the summer months when dealing with higher temperatures outside. Keeping your body hydrated is a must.
Helpful Tip-Drink a glass of water every hour throughout the day to stay hydrated. Ten minutes before you begin your walk, drink a glass of water. During your walk drink more water every 20 minutes. Don’t miss this that means you have to take plenty of water with you on your walk. After you finish your walk, drink a glass or two of water. Avoid caffeinated beverages before your walk, as they cause you to lose fluid and make you thirstier.
Write to us on the fitness blog to let us know if these tips have been a benefit to you.
These tips should be helpful in helping you reach 10,000/steps per day or 70,000/steps per week Walking Program* the fitness opportunity being promoted by New Beginnings for 2008.
Message to Parents-Pool Safety
We want to encourage each of you to take the time to emphasize the importance of pool safety with your children and grandchildren. Many of us have new babies in our families. The first weekend in August Minister Angela had the blessed opportunity to watch her first and only grandson go for his first swimming lesson. Seeing him in the water has caused us to want to take a minute to encourage each of you as parents, grandparents and family friends to make sure your children are safe around water. The YMCA offers swimming lessons for babies as young as 6 months. Take the time to participate. You just may be saving a life.
Monthly Fitness Tips-
Tip 1-If you cannot afford to go to the gym or exercise classes, take the time to recruit some people in your neighborhood, family or at your job to walk with you or to work out with you. It is great fellowship and allows you an opportunity to get to know one another and to be an encouragement. If you are married do it as a couple.
Tip 2-Find some accountability people to help you stay focused on your fitness goals, whether they are physical, spiritual, relational or emotional. We all need help on occasion to reach the next level that God has for us. Don’t think you can of should do it on your own. Let someone come alongside you and bear your burden. It can be as simple as walking with you or listening to you when you need to talk it out.
As always we encourage you to see a physician before beginning any exercise program. Take the first step by getting up and doing something to take care of your most valuable resource, Your Health.
New Beginnings Team News-
Love Images Ministry Summer Conference-PA
Joshlyn, Dollie and Angela had the opportunity to join the Love Images Ministry Team July 18-20 at the Love Images Summer Conference in PA. This is a yearly conference so we encourage you to keep up with that Love Images is doing. Check out Love Images Ministries website at www.loveimagesministries.com.
Under the direction of the founder of the ministry Evangelist Janet Denson this years conference focused on The Purpose and Freedom of Living Whole. There were presenters in the areas of physical, mental and emotional fitness. The physical was lead by Minister Angela Willingham of New Beginnings. The emotional component was lead by Sis. Vanessa Hill, a member of the Black Nurses Association. The mental component was lead by Sis. Gwen Dickinson. The conference also included a presentation by Dr. Jacinta Hines, a pharmacist in the Phoenix area. This session dealt with an individuals relationship with his or her pharmacist. There are questions we can and should ask our doctors and pharmacists. We are planning to provide podcasts of each of the sessions on both the New Beginnings www.mynewtemple.org and Love Images www.loveimagesministries.com websites. Watch for the upcoming podcasts.
Anthony and Maria-The updates have been posted. You will notice that there has been a change in the way the videos are displayed but this is just our effort to make it easier for you to select and view the videos that are of interest to you. There are three video segments this time.
The first segment provides an update on their progress. You will notice that Anthony has lost over 95lbs and Maria has lost over 30. We have included a discussion with some of the people from their neighborhood walking team.
There is also a segment with the team doing a short work out with Anthony and Maria. And yes, you guessed it we also had lunch together. Anthony is an awesome chef, so he put together some healthy recipes that he shared with the group. We will try to get the recipes posted on the site for you. The crab salad was wonderful and so was the Albondigas.
Prayer Request-
Please be in prayer for the New Beginnings Ministry as God continues to open new doors. Pray that God will give us clear direction as it relates to which doors we should go through.
Praise Report-
Thank you for your prayers during our trip to PA to support the Love Images Ministry Summer Conference. It was an awesome blessing to be with Evangelist Janet Denson and the other presenters. The relationships that we were able to establish will never be forgotten. We look forward to how God is going to grow this experience beyond what any of us could have imaged.

The Ministries’ Monthly Book Recommendation-From The New Beginnings Team
"His Needs, Her Needs" by Willard Harley, Jr.
The back of the book cover says:
What Will It Take To Make Your Marriage Sizzle?
Lately we have been hearing more and more about couples that are breaking up after years of marriage or even getting divorces after being married for a very short time. As part of our clergy training our pastor advised us to read two books, “The Five Love Languages” and “His Needs, Her Needs”. God has given this ministry a real burden for relationships. As you know we are dealing with holistic fitness mind, body and spirit. As part of that we include, spiritual, physical, relational and emotional fitness.
I just finished reading His Needs, Her Needs by Willard F. Harley, Jr. This book was excellent. The author went so far as to give you examples of things that can happen within a marriage that allow access to those who are willing to do for your mate what you will not do. I am not married, however, I have a desire to be and I believe this will help me to provide the encouragement and support my future husband will need from me and keep her out of my marriage.
If your marriage is struggling I encourage you to get this book and if you have not read it to also read The Five Love Languages, but I want to tell you that while they give excellent insight and advice, you have to do the work. You have to decide that your marriage or relationship is worth it and put forth some effort to meet the needs of your spouse or the person you are in relationship with. It is time out for passing blame and time to start working to build an affair proof marriage. I would be willing to bet if you do the work you will have a new marriage.
Check it out and let me know what you think. I am going to encourage some of my married friends to try it and we will do a podcast and let you know how it worked out for them.
We would love to hear from you. What have you been reading? Let us know by writing to us on the message board http://mynewtemple.org/aMessages.html or sending us a message at contactus@mynewtemple.org.

Upcoming Events-
Other Weight Loss Success Stories-In our travels we have met some individuals that for various reasons have made a decision to lose weight physically. We are going to be taking some time to talk to some of these individuals to see what made them do it. Was there a final straw, was there some motivating factor and if there was what was it? And the other question, how did they do it? These will be short interviews with pictures, so watch for them, their stories just may be an encouragement to you.
Watch for the Why Do You WorkOut Question to be answered-We were thinking it might be fun to get some snip-its from people in the park or at a gym to find out why they work out. Why do the personal trainers do what they do? What kind of satisfaction does a personal trainer get out of your success?
Watch for Health Tips-As part of our desire to help individuals become holistically fit we are presently working to incorporate health tips into our website. This information will assist by giving individuals basic information on such topics as diabetes and high blood pressure. These segments will be short but informative.
Relational Focus-Watch for upcoming podcasts and articles focused on our relationships, beginning with our relationship with God. If we get our relationship with God right our other relationships will also be better.

Word of Encouragement-
If you are presently taking different types of medications for your physical ailments, please ask some questions of your pharmacist and doctor. Try to find out as much as you can about what you are taking. There may be some thing you can do with your diet or with exercise to reduce your medicine intake. Become an informed patient.
New Beginnings Scripture for August 2008
Galatians 6:1-3:
1 -3 Live creatively, friends. If someone falls into sin, forgivingly restore him, saving your critical comments for yourself. You might be needing forgiveness before the day's out. Stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed. Share their burdens, and so complete Christ's law. If you think you are too good for that, you are badly deceived.
Our Mission Statement
Our Mission is to draw individuals to Jesus Christ through the Ministry of Holistic Fitness and to see the Body of Christ become fit in all areas by providing tools and information to empower you to succeed. New Beginnings is dedicated to helping you gain personal, spiritual, physical, mental and relational fitness by developing the courage and confidence necessary to set and achieve goals based on biblical principles. Most people encounter difficulty reaching goals, sticking with a diet or completing a task by trying to make an outward change without having made any inward spiritual changes. In other words, all improvements in your life begin with a change in your mind and spirit.
